Las Vegas' Ongoing Campaign Targeting New Jersey Biotech and Life Science Businesses Attracts Response From State Business Development Center
Nevada Development Authority Launches Next Phase of Campaign Targeting New Jersey Businesses
LAS VEGAS, March 05, 2007 The Nevada Development Authority (NDA) begins the third phase of their business recruitment campaign that initially launched last August. The main thrust of the New Jersey campaign is aimed at targeting biotech and life science companies to relocate to Las Vegas. The ongoing NDA campaign promoting Las Vegas' pro-business environment and high- tech infrastructure has generated strong business interest and a recent rebuttal from some of New Jersey's business development officials.
In early February, the New Jersey Small Business Development Center (NJSBDC) distributed postcards to hundreds of New Jersey politicians and business leaders to dissuade local businesses from relocating to Las Vegas. The front of the postcard depicted a circle-and-slash no-entry sign that crossed out the word "Nevada." The front of the postcard stated, "Stay in New Jersey. NJSBDC will help you grow." The back of the card read, "When other states come knocking on your door to relocate your business-tell them where to go. Don't gamble with the future of your business," and "Businesses MADE in New Jersey STAY in New Jersey."
"Since we started our New Jersey campaign we've had many inquiries from businesses wanting to know more about Las Vegas. It seems to be working more on a grassroots level than we had initially thought. Now we're getting a totally different response from the business development side, which is combating our efforts," said Somer Hollingsworth, president and CEO of NDA. "We've seen this type of response before from business development in California where we've campaigned in the past. I think business development people are very territorial and they get nervous when they know they can't compete with Las Vegas and its pro-business environment, no personal income tax and no state corporate taxes."
In October 2006, to further Las Vegas' marketing campaign in New Jersey, NDA sent specialized Las Vegas Relocation Kits to a large number of the state's biotech and life science companies. The relocation kits promoted the benefits of living and conducting business in Las Vegas. NDA's goal was educating company presidents and CEOs with information on Las Vegas and its high-tech infrastructure, medical research and technology facilities and local foreign trade zone.
"Despite the refuting message from New Jersey, NDA plans to persist with future campaigns," said Hollingsworth. "The objective is to let companies know that Las Vegas is one of the best places in the country to do business. Our goal is to continue recruiting the rich biotech and life sciences industries on the eastern seaboard."
The new phase of the campaign will take the same approach, promoting a long list of top reasons to relocate or expand to Las Vegas.
Reasons to relocate or expand from the eastern region of the U.S. to Las Vegas:
1. Business-friendly state and local government
2. No state corporate income tax

6. Best economic growth in the United States
7. America's finest telecommunications and technology infrastructure
